Powered Surface Cleaning Instructions

Cleaning and disinfection procedures for the pump and mattress cover on Palm, OpalAir, and OpalAir Turn powered surfaces.

Last updated August 29, 2026

These instructions apply to Palm, OpalAir II, and OpalAir Turn II powered surfaces. Procedures cover the pump filter, the pump unit, and the mattress cover, with deep cleaning and laundering steps for bodily-fluid contact.

Cleaning the Pump Filter

To prolong the life of the pump, inspect the filter every three months. The filter is reusable and can be washed gently using mild detergent and water. Make sure the filter is completely dry before reinserting it into the pump. Replace the air filter when it becomes discolored to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the pump.

Cleaning the Pump Unit

To clean the pump unit, wipe down with a damp cloth pre-soaked in a mild detergent. Ensure that the pump unit is kept away from dust. When selecting a detergent, choose one that will not chemically affect the plastic surface of the pump unit; it is advisable to test the detergent on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Cleaning the Mattress Cover

To clean the mattress cover, use single-use wipes with a solution of neutral detergent and 'hand hot' water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and damp-dry the mattress using single-use wipes.

When cleaning, always visually check the mattress for cuts, tears, cracks, pin holes, or snags. Replace the mattress cover if damaged to protect the mattress. If the inner core of the mattress is heavily soiled, the mattress must be replaced.

Deep Cleaning of the Mattress Cover

If the cover is heavily soiled or has been exposed to bodily fluids, it will require a more thorough cleaning procedure. Use single-use wipes with a 0.1% chlorine solution (1,000 ppm) and cold water to wipe the cover. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and damp-dry the mattress using single-use wipes. Ensure the cover is completely dry before refitting to the mattress.

Laundering the Mattress Cover

1. Remove mattress cover. On OpalAir II and OpalAir Turn II, unplug the hose.

2. Place in the machine and add detergent.

3. Wash. Prewash 60°C + 15 minutes. Main wash 60°C + 15 minutes. Follow by a cold rinse and extraction.

4. Dry. Choose one method:

  • Hang-to-dry: Mattress cover should be hung-to-dry in a clean indoor environment (do not expose to sunlight). Covers must be dry before refitting to the mattress.
  • Tumble dry: Low heat setting for 90 minutes. Drying temperature must not exceed 40°C. Exceeding this temperature will cause damage to the cover.
Evergreen surfaces should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
